Ash Grove Farm is
committed to small-scale agriculture that leaves a light footprint upon the
earth and demonstrates compassion for all living things. We produce pasture-raised meat and fiber, while building community
interdependence through sustainable practices.
We offer yarn,
roving, raw wool, sheep pelts, crafts, and weaned lambs for sale.
Given the variety of colors found in both Navajo-Churro and Shetland sheep, there's no need to dye our yarn to get a beautiful selection of natural colors. Still, I have to admit that while I enjoy working with black, brown, gray, tan, and pure white, dealing with many shades of beige can be a little boring. Thus, I'm experimenting with natural dyeing using common plants and mushrooms found in our region of Vermont. For mordanting (making the dye stick to the fiber) I use non-toxic, food grade materials like alum, cream of tartar, vinegar, and salt. Whether sheep-colored or dyed, each skein of yarn you purchase from us comes with a picture of the actual sheep that grew the wool, along with a brief bio. Not only is it natural, grass-fed wool, it is wool with personality!
